Onyx is hiring a

Director of Estimation

Onyx is seeking a Director of Estimation to join our team as we guide clients along the path to clean energy for users throughout the United States.

Reporting to the Vice President of Construction & Procurement, the Director of Estimation will be responsible for creating project estimates and pre-construction schedules, budgets, and plans that are accurate and competitive across all markets and geographies where Onyx is building projects. The Director of Estimation will ensure that Onyx’s estimating, bidding, scope of work, and procurement process takes advantage of the latest and most accurate tools and data resources, a solid network of suppliers and contractors, favorable pricing, as well as the Estimator’s industry-leading judgement and experience.

This position is based in our midtown NYC headquarters (preferred). Onyx has a hybrid in-office schedule (M-T-Th).

Principal Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze cost models during the Design Development and/or bidding period.
  • Creating a solid Database of L1 pricing that will be used during the bidding process.
  • Assure that the estimates, including general conditions, are accurate, complete and reflect the actual requirements of the project. This includes assuring that there are an adequate number of qualified and financially sound subcontractor proposals received and evaluated.
  • Assure that potential risk factors have been evaluated and reviewed with senior management (i.e. Peer Review, if required, contract bond authorization, contract review, insurance review, etc.)
  • Maintain an EPC Contractor / Subcontractor database and current evaluations utilizing the Vetting process criteria created internally.
  • Negotiate contract pricing with EPC Contractors and Vendors
  • Review contracts, Scopes of Work, and major purchase orders prior to issuance for compliance with the documents and the estimate.
  • Coordinate and develop preliminary construction schedules for each estimate.
  • Provide monthly cost analysis for all active preconstruction assignments and manage preconstruction department budgets.
  • Organize and lead the transition meeting between the Project Management team and the Pre-Construction team and coordinate the follow-up meetings.
  • Proactively identify and solve problems to minimize risk.
  • Keep current on changes and trends in methods of construction and materials, construction costs, wage rates, fringes and working rules.
  • Identify and qualify new material suppliers and subcontractors and place into subcontractor database.

Required Qualifications

Must be passionate about the renewable energy business, hardworking and thrive in the fast pace of a rapidly growing, early-stage company. In addition, Director of Estimation must possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree. Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
  • Minimum 6+years of progressive construction leadership experience with at least 4 years of solar energy experience
  • Estimation experience with a commercial solar EPC firm
  • Experience with a leading renewable energy, general contracting, real estate development or commercial construction firm
  • Strong history of cost management and control, continuous cost reduction methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate pricing and terms with counterparties
  • Strong organizational and scheduling skills to manage the activities of internal and external resources
  • Project level financial responsibility, budget creation and management
  • Expert knowledge of contracting process, subcontractor relationship management, conflict management and risk mitigation
  • Exhibited success with process development and implementation, change management and growth
  • Demonstrated history of management system implementation and utilization
  • Ability to interface effectively at senior management levels internally and externally
  • Willingness and ability to travel to jobsites to conduct site assessments with prospective bidders
  • OSHA 30 certification
  • Experienced with Salesforce, Microsoft Office, Project Budgeting and Project Schedules

Salary Range

  • $100K- $140K depending on experience
